Mumbai police crime branch officials Saturday arrested a 30-year-old man from Uttarakhand for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in an autorickshaw. The accused was trying to escape to Nepal when the city police managed to nab him, officers said.
According to the police, the accused was known to the minor victim. On July 30, he took the girl to the beach and later allegedly raped her in a stationary autorickshaw, the police said. On returning home, the girl informed her parents about it, following which they approached the police.
Citing the sensitive nature of the case, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Lakhmi Gautam pressed crime branch unit-9 officials to trace the accused. When the accused realised that a case was filed against him, he fled from the city following which a police team was on his trail in Nalasopara, Delhi and Uttarakhand.
“We were able to detain the accused from Paudi Gadhwal of Uttarakhand while he was trying to flee to Nepal. He was taken into custody. After proper legal formalities with the local police, he was brought to Mumbai,” said Inspector Data Nayak. The accused has been handed over to the local police for further action.
The FIR was registered under Indian Penal Code section 376 (rape) and section 4, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.
