Anita Peter | A Life Devoted to the Fight Against Cancer | PERFECT WOMAN MAGAZINE

Anita Peter, the Executive Director of the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA), has been a relentless force in the battle against cancer in India. With a career spanning over several decades, Anita has played a pivotal role in the organization’s mission of providing “Total Management of Cancer,” from awareness to rehabilitation. CPAA, established in 1969, is one of India’s leading non-profit organizations dedicated to cancer care, and under Anita’s leadership, it continues to make significant strides in improving the lives of cancer patients across the country.

A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

Anita Peter’s academic background in biology and medical laboratory technology laid a strong foundation for her career in healthcare. Her journey with CPAA is marked by her dedication to cancer prevention, early detection, and creating awareness about the disease. Her role encompasses not just administration, but also spearheading various initiatives that directly impact cancer patients and their families.

One of Anita’s most significant achievements is her instrumental role in getting gutka (chewed tobacco) banned in Maharashtra. This milestone was a turning point in tobacco control efforts in the state, particularly as gutka was widely consumed by the youth. Her advocacy efforts did not stop there; she initiated successful campaigns such as Tobacco Free Mumbai Police Station, Tobacco Free BEST (Public Transport in Mumbai), Tobacco Free Autorickshaw, and Tobacco Free Transgender Campaigns. These initiatives reflect her commitment to reducing tobacco consumption, a major risk factor for cancer.

Empowering Through Awareness and Support

Anita’s work extends beyond tobacco control. She has been a key figure in organizing cancer support groups, which provide much-needed emotional and psychological support to patients and their families. She has also been involved in creating cancer insurance policies that make treatment more accessible to the underprivileged. Under her guidance, CPAA has conducted cancer screenings for over 100,000 individuals, identifying early-stage cancers in approximately 0.3% of cases—a testament to the impact of early detection.

Fundraising is another area where Anita has excelled. She has successfully organized numerous fundraising events, engaging Bollywood celebrities to advocate for cancer awareness and support. Her ability to mobilize resources and raise funds has been crucial in sustaining CPAA’s operations and expanding its reach.

A Global Advocate and Leader

Anita’s expertise and leadership have been recognized on international platforms. She is an APCASOT scholar with the Queensland Cancer Fund in Australia and has participated in various workshops and training programs organized by the American Cancer Society University and the American Association of Cancer Research. Her knowledge and experience have made her a sought-after speaker at global conferences, including the UICC World Conference in Washington DC and Kuala Lumpur, where she shared insights on fundraising strategies for cancer NGOs and the journey of CPAA.

Honors and Recognition

Anita Peter’s contributions to cancer care and tobacco control have earned her numerous accolades. She is the recipient of prestigious awards such as the Rashtra Shakti Award for philanthropy, the WHO Award for outstanding contribution to tobacco control, the Indian Dental Association Award, and the Governor’s Award for outstanding contribution in cancer care. In recent years, she has also been honored with the MEGA (Make Earth Green Again) Award in the category of “Kindness,” the Rashtra Ratna Award, and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar in 2024.

Anita’s work has not only impacted the lives of countless cancer patients but has also set a standard for excellence in the field of cancer care and advocacy. Her dedication, compassion, and leadership continue to inspire others to join the fight against cancer and work towards a healthier, tobacco-free future.
