Journey So Far
I have been in this field for three years now, and I still feel as if I have just started my journey. My stint so far has seen many milestones, of which I am extremely proud. Before this COVID pandemic broke out, I had the honour of performing at a popular club in Mumbai and I later got to know that I was the only female DJ in the club’s history to have secured a gig there. Another achievement came in the form of a New Year’s gig in Vadodara, which was one of the biggest events the city had ever seen. This pandemic-induced lockdown definitely put a stop to these kinds of achievements but nonetheless, I got an opportunity to try something new, something different – going live on social media, releasing remixes. At present, I am collaborating with different artists on some interesting projects.

You being from accounts, what inspired you to enter in the music world as DJ?
I have grown up watching other DJs mesmerise the audience with their skills to get everyone grooving. And this was something that inspired me to try my hand at creating my distinctive style of music. As a kid, I was always the one who played with pots and pans to “create music”, but it was clearly a ruckus for my family. So even though a tallied balance sheet made me happy when I was stuck in my 9-5 job, nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, gives me as much satisfaction as watching people enjoy the music I belt out.

Biggest Challenge in your Career
The biggest challenge was convincing
my family of my career choice. You can imagine how difficult it can be to opt for ‘unconventional’ career options, especially for females. In fact, I was discouraged by my family and friends from pursuing this dream. Like any other typical Indian parent, my parents wanted me to secure a steady, stable job, work 9-5, and be happy being another monotonous worker in the corporate rat race. I am filled with immense gratitude now that I look back at my journey. Not only did I prove them wrong, I have also succeeded in establishing myself as one of the top female DJs in India.

First day as DJ ..
My career as a DJ had a humble start. My housing society had organised a programme for Navratri and they had roped me in for one day. I still remember being a bundle of nerves when I had taken my spot behind the console. The way people reacted to my music instilled confidence and I had thoroughly enjoyed being their DJ for the night. The best part of the night, They had loved my music so much that they ended up letting go of the main DJ they had hired for the remaining nights and asked me to play for the entire duration of Navratri. I was overjoyed! This incident boosted my confidence and I soon started playing at private parties and clubs.

What do you love most about your Profession?
Imagine having a superpower, and using it for people’s good. I feel as if I am blessed with a superpower – to create music that gets people grooving, making them forget whatever it is that’s ailing them, escaping into a world where there’s joy, melody and all things sweet. Personally, music is a way of expression. It is a potent tool that can be used to influence moods, to add some colour to a dull life. And I love this power that my console grants me.

How to you Manage to Your Work and Life
I don’t have to make any dedicated efforts for that. I love my work and I love the fact that I get to create something and be appreciated for it. With that being said, I do take some personal time out for my family. My family, despite the initial reluctance, has become my support system. They help me out greatly to prioritise and manage a lot of things. They help me unplug, motivate me to meditate, to rejuvenate my body and mind. And I guess that helps not only in reducing the overall fatigue but also striking a healthy work-life balance.

How do you measure Success
I have an extremely simple criterion to measure success. I am inundated with calls, work propositions, offers by different artists to collaborate – I think this itself is what success means. I wouldn’t be getting work or offers if I wasn’t good at what I do, right? The fact that I am busy with so many commitments speaks for itself. I believe that I can create something extraordinary out of the ordinary every time I take my position behind that console, and getting more work just proves me right and I am grateful for it.

Who’s your Perfect Woman
Hands down, my mother. As I have mentioned earlier, despite the initial reluctance, my family has been extremely supportive; but my mom has gone out of her way to help me live my dream. I remember how she sold her ornaments so that I could raise money to support my dream, telling me that she was not selling her ornaments but investing in me. Her belief in me played and still plays a crucial role whenever I perform at an event. The strength that she possesses, I hope to get that one day.
